Top 5 Reasons To Move To Hamburg

< All Topics

Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt – when it comes to cities, Germany has quite the menu to choose from. However in this blog we’re revealing our top 5 reasons for moving to Hamburg.

First things first, a little about Hamburg…

Situated in northern Germany, Hamburg is the country’s second largest city. It’s a major port with a rich history of trade, and is connected to the North Sea by the Elbe River.

As the economic hub for Northern Germany, Hamburg provides plenty of employment opportunities, and with a beautiful centre and plenty of green spaces and waterways dotted throughout the city, Hamburg has a lot to offer for both work and leisure.

So, why move to Hamburg?

1. The city is built on water, like Venice

With the North sea, two lakes, three rivers and numerous canals, if you love being near or on water, Hamburg is the city for you! The Aussenalster lake is a hub for sailing and rowing regattas, perfect for people who enjoy watersports.

As the city is built on water, Hamburg has plenty of canals and waterways. In fact, the city boasts six times as many bridges as Venice – more than any other city in the world.

2. Unrivalled culture

When it comes to music and art, Hamburg knows how to put on a show. It’s easily recognised as one of the biggest musical cities in the world and the Elbphilharmonie concert hall is a must for music lovers.

The city also has a wealth of other arts and entertainment venues, including museums, theatres, music venues and clubs.

If it’s the nightlife you’re after, Hamburg has its own well-known party street, known as the ‘Reeperbahn’.

3. Well connected

Hamburg is incredibly well connected. The impressive network of underground and overground trains makes travel in and around the city quick and easy. Hamburg’s airport is also conveniently located less than 10km from the city centre. Outside of the city, it is also within easy reach of Germany’s capital city, Berlin.

4. It’s a green city

If you like to be connected but also have access to quieter spaces to breathe and reflect, Hamburg offers plenty of green spaces and parks. In Hamburg it’s easy to get away from the hustle and bustle, and in 2011 the city was awarded the European Green Capital title in 2011.

5. It’s an Anglophile city

Hamburg is considered to be the most Anglophile German city. This is thought to stem from Hamburg’s historic trade connections with Britain. Tapping into the British way of life, there are even a number of British-inspired events throughout the year to celebrate this link of cultures. This makes it a friendly city for British expats, and makes it the perfect choice if you’re a little nervous about moving.
