Living In Newark UK – What Should You Know?

< All Topics

Newark, also known as Newark-on-Trent, is a town in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire. It’s situated on the banks of the River Trent, and not far from the famous Sherwood Forest – synonymous with the legend of Robin Hood. In this guide, we’re looking at what makes Newark a good place to live, to help you decide whether it’s the right town for you.

One of the ‘best places to live in the UK’

Newark and Sherwood was listed as one of the best places to live in the UK, according to the 2020 Halifax Quality of Life survey.

The district ranked 24th on the list of 50 places. These were ranked in accordance with 26 factors, including employment, earnings, housing affordability, health and wellbeing, education, traffic and crime rates.

What about transport?

Newark is just a short drive or train journey from two key cities: Nottingham and Lincoln. These can be reached by car on the A46, or on a short train trip. You’re also very close to the A1, which connects you to the north and the south of the country.

The town also sits at the crossing of two major railway lines, the East Coast Main Line and the Nottingham to Lincoln Line. With two train stations not far from each other, this makes transport into the East of England nice and simple.

Attractions include historic Newark Castle

The ruins of Newark Castle add historic charm to the town of Newark, and the grounds and gardens are well worth a visit.

Aside from Newark Castle, you also have a range of museums, including the National Civil War Centre, Town Hall Museum and Art Gallery, and the Newark Air Museum.

Slightly further afield, but still under an hour’s drive, you have the ancient Sherwood Forest. This is the perfect day trip to reconnect with nature, and is an ideal place to visit as a family.

There is also a large leisure centre which offers a wealth of health and fitness activities, from swimming to state of the art fitness suites. With regular fitness classes on offer, it’s also an ideal way to meet people from the local area.

If you like supporting local businesses, there are plenty of markets to enjoy. These include antique and craft stalls and a monthly farmer’s market in Newark Market Place.

What about schools?

Planning to move a family to the area? You’ll want to know that there are good schools to choose from. The good news is that there are lots of schools situated close together, including primary schools, a high school, academies and the Highfields Independent School and Day Nursery.

What are property prices like in Newark?

As well as being recently ranked as one of the top places to live, Newark was also cited as one of the top places for house price growth in the UK in 2021. The town came second only to Taunton in Somerset.
